Gartner Symposium / ITxpo | 5 - 9 November 2017 | Barcelona, Spain

Last week, CEO Roger Harry attended the Gartner Symposium / ITxpo in Barcelona, Spain.

Gartner, Inc. is the leading research and advisory company for all major functions in every industry. The Gartner Symposium / ITxpo event is the World's largest gathering of CIOs and Senior IT Executives. Delegates joined to explore new ways of thinking and to gain trusted insights and guidance to lead organisations with confidence.

The event focused on digital transformation and delivered research and advice on 10 key themes most critical in technology, business and leadership, which were:

 Technology & Information

  • Artificial Intelligence: Do More Together
  • The Future of Experience: Deliver a Winning Impression
  • Internet of Things: Secure the Value of Things
  • Security and Risk: Build a Resilient Business
  • Cloud: Coordinate Success

  Business Strategy

  • Platform Economy: Connect and Grow
  • Cost Optimization: Run IT Like a Business
  • Disruption and Innovation: Redefine Your Business

  • Leadership in a Digital Age: All About Influence
  • Culture and People: Your Biggest Asset

Speakers at the event included Werner Vogels, CTO,; Bill McDermott, CEO, SAP and Brad Smith, President & Chief Legal Officer, Microsoft. These forward-thinking guest speakers covered topics on ‘influencing the business, leading in chaos’ and more.

The event offered many opportunities to network with peers from the IT industry and from other sectors too.

The key takeaways from the Gartner Symposium were:

Growth and Technology Gartner’s research found that CEOs have prioritised growth and technology for 2017-2018. As the two key elements reshaping most industries, this finding was not a surprise to many.

Industrialise your Platform Gartner advised that industrialising your platform will allow you to gain more value. The three technologies suggested to scale included the Internet of Things (IoT), APIs and Artificial Intelligence.

Business Metrics From Gartner’s CEO research almost 50% of all CEOs admitted to having no metrics in place to measure digital transformation progress and success. Gartner developed a framework to measure digital transformation success with two KPI categories: ‘Optimising Success’ and ‘new revenue & models’. This new model allows organisations to define the value of digital transformation and measure the success of the digital business journey.
