Virtualisation uncovered

Why use 10 servers when 1 will do?

Virtualisation uncovered

jigsaw copyHeard the terminology but have never really understood what it’s all about? In a non-technical nutshell – virtualisation enables you to make one server do the job of ten - helping you to save money, ‘go green’ and make better use of your resources.

Virtualisation has enabled many of our customers to solve specific business needs by:-

  • REDUCING COST by consolidating servers to reduce hardware requirements
  • IMPROVING ENERGY EFFICIENCY by reducing power and cooling requirements
  • ENSURING BUSINESS CONTINUITY by enabling disaster recovery and high availability

What is Virtualisation?

Virtualisation is a proven software technology that allows a single server to do the job of 10+ servers. The benefits of this are that you can save money not just on hardware but administration, cooling and power, all while reducing your companies carbon footprint.

Why would I Virtualise?

  • Green IT – When one server does the job of 10, you decrease the power and cooling required for your systems. Think how much money you could save in electricity alone without the effect you’re having on your businesses carbon footprint!
  • Server utilisation - Increase the utilisation of your existing hardware from 10-15% up to 80%. Industry standard show that most standard servers are only utilized by 10-15% but with the power of utilisation you can increase this up to 80%.
  • Server Consolidation – Reduce server hardware and operating cost by up to 50%, when you run multiple servers for different applications the cost of managing and maintain these are far higher than maintaining
  • Hardware Refresh – if your servers are due for an overhaul and multiple new servers will be required to replace the old ones why not replace all of these with a single virtualised server
  • Disaster Recovery – Virtualised systems lend themselves very simply to a DR solution, it is a simple task to backup an entire server to disk or tape and/or replicate to another location.
  • High Availability – ensuring your systems are available 100% of the time with virtualisation is a standard task that many companies have implemented.
