The Royal Opera House is an opera house and major performing arts venue in Covent Garden, central London. Focusing on four key areas: fostering artistic excellence, widening learning and participation, improving the audience experience and expanding its international reputation, it transforms people’s lives through opera and ballet.
The Royal Opera House’s outdated infrastructure was preventing the organisation to lead by example.
As a Grade I listed building with over two square miles of floor space, networking at the Royal Opera House was never easy, it was expensive and didn’t support modern protocols.
Circle IT surveyed the Royal Opera House to determine how to deploy a wireless and wired solution in the complex, Grade I listed building.
From the audit Circle IT were able to provide a highly available solution of a new wired infrastructure covering the two computer rooms and heat maps for the deployment of the wireless access points, which provides complete coverage for staff and visitors
Dell EMC offered the strongest solution with its S4810P core switches. The switches matched or outperformed competitors’ switches at a much lower total cost of ownership.
The Opera House refreshed its entire IT in stages with Dell EMC storage, servers, desktops, laptops, tablets, networking and firewalls.
From the complete transformation The Royal Opera House have seen a number of benefits including a modern wireless network that was able to help the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards night run without a hitch and also gaining a strategic IT partner to enable cutting-edge IT both now and in the future. The Royal Opera House benefits from a resilient, offsite data centre which will provide a stable platform for IT growth. The executive board welcomed the change from desktops to tablets which set the template for staff mobility. Digital signage allowed the company to reach more people which is crucial for logistics and getting people to the right place at the right time.
“Once we started putting the foundations in place, we found Dell EMC and Circle IT had the solutions we needed to give us a modern network that would allow us to excel.”
Jason Oliver, Head of Technology Operations at the Royal Opera House
